Robert Mimbs was born August 6th, 1964 in Kansas City, Missouri. Mimbs starred at the University of Kansas in a pass happy offence. He began his career in 1987 for the Phoenix Cardinals (NFL) as a replacement running back during the strike. After failed attempts with an number of NFL clubs who looked to move him to receiver Mimbs looked North and joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1990.

Starting well down on the depth chart Mimbs worked his way up quickly and had a fantastic rookie season. He ran for 1341 yards and caught 71 passes for another 536 yards.

Mimbs followed up his strong rookie season with his best year as a pro in 1991, rushing for 1769 yards rushing including 15 touchdowns as well adding 39 catches for 438 yards and 1 touchdown through the air. Mimbs was named to the All-Canadian team both of those first two seasons, won the CFL rushing title in both seasons and was the runner-up for the Most Outstanding Player in 1991. Mimbs was also awarded the Jeff Russel Memorial Trophy in 1991.

In 1992, Mimbs was released by Winnipeg after 7 games and signed with the B.C. Lions where he enjoyed some success in limited action.

After sitting out a year in 1994 he returned with Saskatchewan midway through the 1995 season. He would enjoy another terrific season with the Roughriders in 1996 with 1,403 yards rushing. For his efforts in the 1996 season with the Roughriders he earned his third All-Canadian honour and was the Western nominee and eventual runner-up for the Most Outstanding Player in the CFL. He was also awarded the Eddie James Memorial Trophy and the Jeff Nicklin Trophy in 1996. Mimbs finished his career with 6162 yards rushing.
